Hello all,

I have a pretty old laptop which has low configuration.

Model is Compaq evo1000v. In the specs its mentioned that Hard Drive can be upgraded upto only 40GB.
Mine currently is having 30GB. I think its IDE. Will I be able to upgrade it more than 40GB coz some people say
Yeah if it is IDE we can do it. So please clarify.

Specs for reference

There used to be a couple of harddrive size limits in the past but I never heard of any 40GB barrier.

The one you might run into is the 128GB barrier due to the limits of the 28-bit logical block addressing (LBA) used by older ATA spezifications.

The link you mentioned only lists those sizes up to 40GB as options when ordering the laptop. They simly did not offer larger disks at that time.

So if you install a new IDE drive you should be able to use at least 128GB if your laptop uses 28-bit LBA.

Hi sunfish,

I am sorry to ask you, is there any way to find whether my HDD uses 28-bit LBA or anything else?

It depends on the interface, see ATA-1, ATA-2, ATA-3 , ATA-4 and ATA-5 all are 28 bit LBA but ATA-6 is 48 bit LBA. You may see the chart in the end of this wiki doc ==> http://en.wikipedia....ki/Parallel_ATA

Well according to your Laptop model, your 30 GB HDD interface is ATA-5.

For more info about ATA here you go ==> http://en.kioskea.ne...pc/ide-ata.php3
