Question concerning Spanning Tree

We have had 2 broadcast storms within the last week. They were caused by the unmanaged switches we have on our network. Why doesn't STP stop the loop and block the offending port. Can STP stop loops on unmanaged swithes that don't run any version of STP. We are running MSTP on our procurve switches. On both occasions, our network was brought down.

Procurve switches are... HP.

Now to answer the question more correctly I'd like to see your configs - Give some more input if you want more output.
