What Is Icmp Buffer Size

Recommended Posts

Can anyone explain about ICMP protocol buffer size. What we do with increasing buffer size when ping to another host. Is it increasing the payload?. Is there any relation with throughput of the link and acceptable ICMP buffer size?

your question is related to packet fragmentation which is in relation with maximum transmission unit.

there is one very useful commnd to check the current value

open the command line and type:

ping www.google.com -f -l xxxx, where xxxx is the packet size

example ping www.google.com -f -l 1492 (in bytes)

the packet needs to be fragmented. Lower the size the packet in increments of +/-10 (e.g. 1472, 1462, 1440, 1400) until you have a packet size that does not fragment.
