Well friends, i have a computer with 80GB HDD ATA on which windows XP pro is installed(In C drive),i then installed Fedora 7(in E drive) and i used GRUB boot loader.Everything was going smoothly for two weeks, but then i reinstalled winXP pro, here comes the problem,i cannot see Fedora in the boot menu again,(i think my GRUB boot-loader) must have been wiped out.I can't even access Fedora partition through WinXp,tell me what to do.
Is there a way(tool) to rectify this problem in the future? so that i can access both these OSs independent of what happens to other?

Thanks for reading,awaiting reply.

Hi friend,
you can install Fedora with XP or Vista..but the Windows should be first..here I think there was a danage in the MBR or somrthing elso..so try to use the
OS selector..

Actually windows is not as kind, or flexible ;), as GRUB or any other *nix boot loader so basically when you install windows it simply wipes out the entire MBR assuming it'll be the only OS installed.

I guess you learned the lesson the hard way, no worries most of us have been there, now what you can do here is :

1 - Use a linux cd and try to rescue the old linux installation, basically what you have to do is to make linux rewrite the MBR and rebuild the GRUB configuration.

2 - You could configure the Windows boot manager to boot linux, yes a little tricky but you can do this as well, the only cons here it's you need to remember where you installed linux (aka the disk name linux assigned to its partition) and of course you need access to a shell (the rescue one should do the job)

3 - You can simply reinstall Linux after ou have installed Windows.

Option 3 maybe the rude one but if you're not that skilled with linux, or simply don't have important data on the linux partition, I would suggest you to just go with option 3, if you instead want to try option 2 just let me know I'll write the steps you need to follow to configure windows to boot linux as well.

Cheer Lethe.

Reboot system with rescue disk, dvd or first cd 1 from fc7.
Boot to rescue mode.
Run the grub-install command:
grub-install /dev/hda
or /dev/sda - whatever your first hard drive maybe

+1

you just need to reinstall boot loader.

I have done it many times on Red Hat with the help of 1st boot cd.

Regards,

h_im4u,

After above step you will get grub prompt to choose the OS you want to boot from. No need to edit any file.
