Have you taken a oath or are you pledged to play CBT Videos in firefox only?

i couldnt get them playing till now .. trust me neither cbt nor ts plays in my ubuntu after following each and everything out there

i agree there are problems with the play back of wmv content in the ubuntu especilally cbt nuggets . i have bypassed this .

you have two options . 1.convert wmv to divx or xvid and enjoy in linux

2. install a vmware in ubuntu and install xp in it . and play cbt in vm of xp .

i found second is the most effective one as i could also do many of the windowns activities if needed

a little advice and by the way setting up vmware is extremely easy in ubuntu any help let me know

regards
raaki

back in windows xp, when i installed vmware, ive noticed that the pc becomes slower and there are VMWare processes that are running even when the application is off. will that happen in ubuntu? i dont want ubuntu to run slower because ive installed gns3 there. btw, is VMware for linux also free?

well , it depends on your ram frankly ... how much ram does your computer have ? a 1 gb is suggested and 2 gb swap is done by default .. yes you do have free version of vmware and also the paid version . iam using the workstation which is a paid one ;) . iam not facing any trouble with vmware and especially gns3

good luck

Hi.

I have Ubuntu 8.04 and play WMV with mplayer without problem... but remember that firefox or "ubuntu" can not "read" .HTA files. This files are use to open the "CBT menu".

Another option is with WINE; install IE6 and Windows Media Player. I can run .HTA files with Wine/IE6 but at this time i can not install Windows Media Player.

bye

Guys I am not very well familiar with Ubuntu - not that I have never seen it? Do we define the swap or \swp space in Ubuntu?

Also even I would love to play CBT Nuggets in my Opera Window - the damn IE shows that Active X warning everytime I run it for any video. So its kinda annoying I have to like allow the ActiveX everytime it wants to load.

Coolboi -

Naah it doesnt help. We have options for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites and Restricted Sites. It doesnt have My Computer option. Which I see when I play the nugget video in IE.

Cheers!

You can play the individual CBT videos with mplayer if you have downloaded the "restricted codecs". These codecs are not included in Ubunutu or any other distros by default something to do with the copy rights.

So once again yes you can play them but you have to get the codecs first. Here is how you do it:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

To add all the codecs on earth, here is what you do: :D

Step 1: Add Medibuntu to Your Repository List

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu...st.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

sudo aptitude install medibuntu-keyring

sudo aptitude update

Step 2: Install Flash Plugins for Firefox

sudo aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree

Step 3: Installing Audio and Video Codecs

sudo aptitude install w32codecs

Step 4: Installing DVD Playback Packages

sudo aptitude install libdvdcss2 libdvdread3 libdvdnav4

sudo aptitude install regionset

Step 5: Installing DVD Playback Programs

sudo aptitude install xine-ui libxine-extracodecs libxine1-ffmpeg

sudo aptitude install totem-xine totem-xine-firefox-plugin

The last line will actually enable firefox to play the media files too. So Poster#1 you have got some installing to do. :D

although adding make it a wmv compatible it never plays atleast on my system

i have even installed automatix2 which has wide variety of options but never helped me .. try playing train signall atleast . you cant hear the audio .. wmv is strictly windows media .. and ofcourse normal wmvs can be played when it comes to cbt nuggets they are patented and copyrighted so there would be a little chance to play them . the only means if you want to avoid a vm is to convert them to divx ...

@be quick

a swap is a must for the systems let us say upto 3 gb ram ... swap file system is like the virtual memory as mentioned .. the more swap you have the more better the os will be when it requires ram hunger applications like gns3 ...

@the dark lord

forgive my ignorance, ok, so i only intend to play cbt on ubuntu on 8.10. no more dvds. so i guess, i will only use only

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

and

Step 1 and Step 3,

right? And then, what player will i use? will VLC, MPLAYER or Totem automatically recognize those codecs? many thanks.

@raaki

im testing some small video formats using Total Video Converter that Ubuntu 8.10 may recognize. i tried Xvid/Divx, but the 10MB becomes 200MB. ouch. Maybe, u wanna try some...

ok, so i can call this a partial success. here is the output:

SOURCE:
CBT Nuggets Video (10.9 MB)

PROCEDURE:
Covert using Total Video Converter using H264/AVC Mpeg4 (whatever that means!) in Lower Quality.

OUTPUT:
*.mp4 (33.5 MB) that can be played in Ubuntu 8.10 using VLC!

BTW, High Quality is only 33.9 MB

So the file is approximately 3X of the original unlike with Divx/Xvid. Please try other formats if you have time. Thanks.

Coolboi this should solve all of your problems:

https://help.ubuntu....strictedFormats

you will find multiple servers to download the files.
