Funny Story,

I work as a level one tech support engineer in a fortune 500 company. I have my MCSA and I have a Bacherlors in Computer Science and a MAsters in Computer Science. I just started working for this company about a year ago.

My managers seem to always hire people from outside the company and rarely hiring people from within their departments. A month ago they hired a woman; let's say her name is Janet. This was not her real name but i am changing it for those purposes. Anyway Janet had gone through a regular interview and was also given a "technical interview". We will talk about that little bit later.

Janet was hired on the spot because of her resume and her experience. My managers were in AWE with her resume and hired her immediately as a level 2/3 engineer.

Here is her resume. I have erased any info that would get back to her.

The resume showed a lot of experience and it sounded really amazing. But it was too amazing. Her first day on the job was interesting. She was very interested in the work, asked a lot of questions and showed interest.

On Her second week at the job she became annoying. We usually give all employees company laptops and she had a lot of problems with her own.

She was given a external USB hard drive and told to use this for work purposes. Her first problem was that she could not connect the USB hard drive to the computer. She was plugging the USB connector into the Ethernet (RJ45) jack of the laptop. At first we thought she was joking and then we realized she was serious. She had various troubles clicking on the Windows icons. She tried single-clicking the icons hoping that the applications would run but they wouldn’t because she wasn’t double clicking them.
When she was able to get her hard drive going, her drive letter did not show up as say for example, a G:\ drive because the G:\ drive was already reserved by a network drive. Instead of going into computer management and changing the drive letters, she kept unplugging and re-plugging in the USB drive, eventually messing it up.

She had called on the help of our Manager and the manager was so upset that she couldn’t do any thing technically, he asked, “Aren’t you a MCSE??? You should know how to use Windows XP, and you should know how to use a Laptop and a USB drive. ” (THE MANAGER HIMSELF HAD TO SHOW HER HOW TO USE A USB HARD DRIVE)
She became very annoying to all of us because she didn’t know how to use simple Windows Applications. She could barely browse the internet. She even angered the Help desk guys because she would bug them every hour on issues with her laptop that weren’t even issues.

Let me add that we also knew that something was wrong becasue her technical vocabulary was lacking. Case in point, we use VMWARE sessions for the many different VMWARE testing OS enviroments we use. Now I dont know how you guys call it where your from, but She kept calling them technologies .

Example

ME: Let's use our Server 2003 VMWARE session to test our product.
JANET: Let's use our "technologies" to test our products.

I forgot to menthion another thing. She didnt know what a BAT file was and she had a hard time using RDP.

We experienced this for 5 or 6 weeks and no one could understand why Janet was so poor technically. What we realized eventually that she was not given a proper technical interview. She wasn’t even given one at all. The managers were so awe struck by the resume that they didn’t bother to check it. The mangers were fed up with her lack of skill. They downgraded her to Level one phone support. But she couldn’t speak to the customers well either. Finally, the managers decided to have a meeting with her and demanded that she prove she had an MCSE and other certifications stated on the resume. She could not provide a single transcript.

She claimed that she was MCSE but Microsoft said she needed one more exam to be MCSE + Security. But without transcripts to prove this she was then seen as a liar. The managers had to let her go due to false info on the résumé.

But what about the resume? Maybe she copied and pasted this and put her own name on it. Regardless this should be a valuable lesson to all those fakers out there and also a funny story to you all.

She probably would have stayed there longer if she kept her mouth shut. She kept asking too many stupid questions that made us all suscpicious.

People like that make the baby Jesus Cry

In all Seriousness I am an MCSE and I have never been asked to prove it by showing my microsoft transcript. Maybe its because of the way I talk about technology but I wish people would validate more. Think of the next company she gets hired at who believe she is a MCSE. Even people pretending to have the cert without knowing anything downgrade the value of the MCSE.

yeah I forgot to add that she incurred the wrath of every department in a span of 4 weeks. Even the HR manager got into a shouting match with her.

i dont think anyone should cover for these people becasue
1. they are stealing money from the company where hard working people should be recieving it and,
2. they are trying to ride on everyone elses's coattails

What am trying to say is, your employer gave you a chance make it worthwhile, giving you a chance doesn't necessarily translate to them being stupid.

True, I agree. I know they were trying to hire more experienced people to help the department, but why not improve and add on from within? There are alot of good employees that they can push up as well. What I am trying to say is I wish they would show more faith in their internal employees, but i dont know, i;m not a manager so it's kinda hard to figure out what they are thinking.

I wish I had the opportunity she had because I can atleast do all the things mentioned.
With 7years Support/Desktop Technician and my MCSE (paper) & CNA 5.1 I am a bit skeptical going for a Windows Server position because of my lack of server experience that will be evident at the interview with experience interviewers, but atleast I invested at a home lab and running CBT's like [productbanned]/CBT Nuggets/Testout to atleast have an idea what they talk about.

We all had to start somewhere and after paying alot of money as well attending MCSE classes & writing exams people like me just need an opportunity and being hungry to make a success of the new job. I saw a MCSE candidate (Was a backup operator then) coming in every night for about 6months try to catch up at work with the technology to make up for the lack of experience and today he is a successfull engineer.

So is just depends how must you want the job and what you will do to be successfull.
Just my 2cents.

I doubt you can say you are hungry if you have been in IT for 7 years and still have no server experience. Get your finger out and if you have to leave to get better experience, do it.

I have known a few that have been in IT for 5 yrs to about 8 yrs and have ZERO server experience. Depends on your motivation and job your in. Some people are "comfy" and do not want to move on or can not, so its not fair. Companies should also take into growth for the employee and see that they get the skills needed and to move up.

I agree completely. If you are happy going to work and happy all day, good luck to you. It doesn't matter what your job is. That is what we all should aspire to. All I am saying is if you are not hapy or if you have abition, do something about it. Don't wait for a promotion or great job to fall out of the sky.
